Acyclovir is an antiviral drug is used to treat illnesses caused by herpes viruses, include genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chicken pox. Take this medication as prescribed by your physician. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Start treatment with Acyclovir as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (such as tingling, burning, blisters). Be aware that herpes infections are very contagious and you can infect other people, even while you are being treated with Acyclovir. Try to avoid contacts with other people. Avoid touching an infected area and then touching your eyes. It is recommended to wash your hands frequently to intercept the transfer of infection. Try to avoid sexual intercourse or use a latex condom to prevent spreading the virus to others.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking acyclovir?

You should not use Acyclovir in case you are allergic to it or Valacyclovir (Valtrex).
