Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat major depressive disorder, bulimia nervosa (an eating disorder) obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Sertraline restores the balance of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain, which helps to improve certain mood problems.
It may also be administered to treat other conditions as determined by your physician.
You should not use Sertraline in the following cases: you are using pimozide (Orap), or an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam). Serious and sometimes fatal reactions can occur when these medicines are taken with sertraline. It is recommended to wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAO inhibitor before you can take sertraline.
Before using Sertraline you should tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions listed below: liver or kidney disease; seizures or epilepsy; bipolar disorder (manic depression); or a history of drug abuse or suicidal thoughts.
In such cases it is obligatory to consult with your doctor or health care provider before taking this drug.
Be aware that Sertraline may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the following: pimozide (Orap), isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate); astemizole (Hismanal®); cisapride (Propulsid®); pimozide (Orap®); terfenadine (Seldane®); thioridazine (Mellaril®); medicines called MAO inhibitors-phenelzine (Nardil®), tranylcypromine (Parnate®), isocarboxazid (Marplan®), selegiline (Eldepryl®); amphetamine; bosentan; carbamazepine; certain diet drugs (dexfenfluramine, fenfluramine, phentermine, sibutramine); certain migraine headache medicines (almotriptan, eletriptan, frovatriptan, naratriptan, rizatriptan, sumatriptan, zolmitriptan); cimetidine; cyclosporine; dextroamphetamine; dextromethorphan; diazepam; doxercalciferol; furazolidone; linezolid; other medicines for mental depression, mania, anxiety, psychosis or difficulty sleeping; Phenobarbital; prescription pain medications; procarbazine; rifabutin; rifampin; rifapentine; selegiline; St. John's wort; tolbutamide; tramadol; warfarin.
It may not be a complete list of all interactions with other drugs. To prevent any complications you should check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.
How to use Sertraline
Use this medicine as recommended by your doctor. Sertraline should be taken orally with or without food at the same time each day. It is recommended to take each tablet with water.
In case you miss a dose of Sertraline, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next intake, skip the missed dose and take it according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses to catch up.
You should know that improvement in your depression may start in several weeks (up to 4 weeks). Do not stop taking Sertraline even if you feel well. Try not to miss any doses. You may have unpleasant side effects if you stop taking this medication suddenly.
Keep Sertraline at indoor temperature away from moisture and heat.
Seek emergency medical attention in case overdose is suspected. Symptoms of overdose are dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, agitation, tremor, confusion, seizures, and coma.
Do not drink alcohol, as it can increase side effects of Sertraline.
Some medicines can add to sleepiness caused by Sertraline usage. Avoid using other medicines that make you sleepy (such as cold medicine, other pain medication, and muscle relaxants).
Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities as Sertraline usage may impair your thinking or reactions.
Children and teenagers who take Sertraline may be at increased risk for suicidal thoughts or actions. Adults may also be affected. The risk may be greater in patients who have had suicidal thoughts or actions in the past. The risk may also be greater in patients who have had bipolar (manic-depressive) illness, or if their family members have had it. Look after patients who use Sertraline closely. Contact the doctor immediately in case new, worsened, or sudden symptoms such as depressed mood; anxious, restless, or irritable behavior; panic attacks; or any unusual change in mood or behavior occur. Consult with your doctor immediately in case any signs of suicidal thoughts or actions take place. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING
Sertraline is in FDA pregnancy category C. It may be deleterious to an unborn baby. Consult with your doctor immediately in case you are pregnant or plan pregnancy during course of treatment. It is not clear whether Sertraline passes into breast milk. You should not use this medication without telling your doctor in case you are breast-feeding a baby.
What are the possible side effects of Sertraline?
Seek emergency immediately in case you have any of these severe side effects: signs of an allergic reaction: skin rash or hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
You should consult with your doctor immediately in case you have any of side effects especially bothersome listed below: mood changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, agitation, aggressiveness, severe restlessness, mania (mental and/ or physical hyperactivity), thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself; seizure (convulsions); tremors, shivering, muscle stiffness or twitching; problems with balance or coordination; or agitation, confusion, sweating, fast heartbeat; feeling nervous, restless, or unable to sit still; drowsiness, dizziness, weakness; sleep problems (insomnia); nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite or weight; or decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm.
