Tetracycline is an antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It slows bacterial growth and allows the body's defense mechanisms to eliminate bacteria.
You should not use Tetracycline in case you have any condition mentioned below: you are allergic to any ingredient in Tetracycline or other tetracycline antibiotics (eg, doxycycline); you are currently taking acitretin or methoxyflurane.
In such cases it is obligatory to consult with your doctor or health care provider before taking this drug.
Before using Tetracycline
Before using Tetracycline you should tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions listed below: you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding a baby; you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; you have allergies to medicines or other substances; you have diarrhea, a stomach infection, or kidney problems.
Be aware that Tetracycline may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the following: acitretin or isotretinoin because side effects, such as increased pressure in the fluid surrounding the brain, may occur; digoxin, methotrexate, methoxyflurane, or oral anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) because their actions and side effects may be increased by Tetracycline; atovaquone, lithium, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), or penicillins (eg, amoxicillin) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Tetracycline.
It may not be a complete list of all interactions with other drugs. To prevent any complications you should check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.
How to use Tetracycline
Use this medicine as advised by your physician. Tetracycline should be taken orally on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
It is recommended to take Tetracycline with a full glass of water (8 oz/240 mL). It is good idea not to lie down for 30 minutes after taking this drug.
In case you also use antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium; preparations containing bismuth, iron, zinc, or sodium bicarbonate; or calcium rich foods (eg, milk, dairy products, calcium-enriched juices) do not take them within 2 to 3 hours before or after taking Tetracycline, as it decreases absorption.
In case you miss a dose of Tetracycline, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next intake, skip the missed dose and take it according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses to catch up.
Important safety information
Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities as Tetracycline usage may lead to dizziness or blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Try to avoid such activities.
Consult with your doctor immediately if you experience severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps or bloody stools. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring immediate medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without consulting your doctor.
Use Tetracycline for the full course of treatment, as any failures may decrease the effectiveness of Tetracycline and may increase the risk that the bacteria will no longer be sensitive to Tetracycline and will not be able to be treated by this or certain other antibiotics in the future.
Long-term or repeated use of Tetracycline may lead to a second infection. Consult with your doctor in case signs of a second infection take place.
Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths, as you may become sunburned more easily while taking Tetracycline. It is recommended to use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.
Do not use this medicine after expiration date, as outdated medicine is highly toxic to the kidneys.
Tetracycline usage in CHILDREN may lead to permanent discoloring of the teeth.
Lab tests may be performed while you are using Tetracycline. It is important to control your progress or to check for side effects. Follow all doctor and lab appointments strictly.
The effectiveness of hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may be decreased while using Tetracycline. It is recommended to use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms) to prevent pregnancy.
Tetracycline should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 8 years of age, as safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been proved.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING
Tetracycline may be deleterious to the fetus. In case you plan pregnancy, consult with your doctor and discuss the benefits and risks of using Tetracycline during pregnancy. It is known that Tetracycline passes into breast milk. Avoid breast-feeding a baby while taking Tetracycline.
Possible side effects of Tetracycline
You should consult with your doctor in case you have any of side effects especially bothersome listed below: black hairy tongue; blurred vision; bulky loose stools; diarrhea; difficulty swallowing; fever; headache; hives; hoarseness; indigestion; inflammation or redness of tongue; joint pain; loss of appetite; mouth sores; nausea; rash; sensitivity to sunlight; sore throat; stomach pain; swelling and itching of the rectum.
Seek emergency immediately in case you have any of these severe side effects: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); infection (fever, chills, sore throat); itching; nausea; severe skin reaction to the sun; vaginal irritation or discharge; vomiting.
