Information about Singulair

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that is used for long-term treatment and prevention of asthma. It helps to decrease certain asthma and allergy symptoms. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

You should not use Montelukast in case you are allergic to any ingredient in it.

In such case it is obligatory to consult with your doctor or health care provider before taking this drug.

Before using Montelukast

Before using Montelukast you should tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions listed below: you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding a baby; you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances; you have liver problems.

Be aware that Montelukast may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the following: certain anticonvulsants (eg, phenobarbital) or rifampin because they may decrease Montelukast's effectiveness.

It may not be a complete list of all interactions with other drugs. To prevent any complications you should check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Montelukast

Use Montelukast as recommended by your health care provider. It should be taken with or without food. Do not stop using Montelukast even if you feel well. Try not to miss any doses.

In case you miss a dose of Montelukast, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next intake, skip the missed dose and take it according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses to catch up.

Important safety information

Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities as Montelukast usage may lead to dizziness or drowsiness. Try to avoid such activities. Use Montelukast with caution.

Montelukast is not effective in case an asthma attack has started. It is recommended to carry appropriate medicine (bronchodilator inhalers) for the emergency help. You should consult with your doctor immediately, in case your short-acting inhaler does not work well or your asthma worsens.

It is not recommended to decrease your dose or stop taking Montelukast or other asthma medicines without medical consultation.

Avoid taking aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (ibuprofen), in case your asthma is sensitive to.

PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING

In case you become pregnant, consult with your doctor immediately and discuss the benefits and risks of taking Montelukast while pregnancy. It is not clear whether Montelukast passes into breast milk. In case you are or will be breast-feeding a baby while you are taking Montelukast, consult with your doctor and discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Montelukast

You should consult with your doctor in case you have any of side effects especially bothersome listed below: cough; dizziness; headache; indigestion; nausea; stomach upset or pain; stuffy nose; tiredness; trouble sleeping; weakness.

Seek emergency immediately in case you have any of these severe side effects: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); aggressive behavior; agitation; dark urine; fever; flu-like symptoms; hallucinations; irregular heartbeat; new or worsening wheezing or other breathing problems; numbness or tingling of hands or feet; seizures; severe or persistent stomach pain; severe sinus inflammation; swelling; unusual bruising or bleeding; upper respiratory tract infection; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
