How to use Budesonide
Use this medicine as recommended by your health care provider. Budesonide is inhaled through the mouth. Recommendations: you will need to prime a new inhaler before you use it for the first time. Twist the inhaler cover and lift it off. Hold the unit upright (mouthpiece on top) and turn the grip fully to the right, then fully to the left until it clicks. Repeat. Do not reprime the inhaler. You will only need to prime the inhaler once even if you do not use it for a long period of time. The inhaler is now ready for use. To use a dose, twist the inhaler cover and lift it off. Hold the unit upright (mouthpiece on top) and turn the grip fully to the right, then fully to the left until it clicks. Do NOT shake the inhaler. Turn your head away from the inhaler and breathe out fully. Place the mouthpiece between your lips and inhale forcefully and deeply. You may not feel the medicine. Remove the inhaler from your mouth and breathe out. Do NOT breathe out through the inhaler. Avoid biting or chewing the mouthpiece.
Inhaler must be kept clean and dry at all times. You should replace the mouthpiece cover after each use. It is recommended to rinse the mouthpiece with water after each use, as it helps to prevent mouth or throat infections. Avoid swallowing the rinse water. Budesonide should not be used with a spacer.
Do not stop taking Budesonide even if you feel well. Use Budesonide regularly to get the most benefit from it and try not to miss any doses. In case you miss a dose of Budesonide, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next intake, skip the missed dose and take it according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses to catch up.
Important safety information
It is normal that improvement in asthma control can occur within 24 hours of beginning treatment; the maximum effect of Budesonide may take as long as 1 to 2 weeks, or longer. In case symptoms do not improve within that period of time or if they worsen, consult with your doctor.
It is not recommended to take more than prescribed dose or stop taking Budesonide without medical consultation.
You should use caution in case you switch from an oral steroid (eg, prednisone) to Budesonide. In some cases you may need to use an oral steroid (eg, prednisone) again, as it may take several months for your body to make enough natural steroids to handle events that cause physical stress. Such events are injury, surgery, infection, loss of blood electrolytes, or a sudden asthma attack. These conditions may be severe and sometimes even fatal. You should consult with your doctor immediately in case any of these events occur. It is also recommended to carry a card at all times that says you may need an oral steroid (eg, prednisone) if any of these events occur.
Consult with your doctor right away in case you switch from an oral corticosteroid to Budesonide and have symptoms such as muscle and joint pain, exhaustion, depression, unusual weakness, or severe or persistent nausea or vomiting.
The ability of your body to fight against infection may be decreased by Budesonide. Try to avoid contact with people with colds or infections. Consult with your doctor in case you have symptoms of infection (fever, sore throat, rash, or chills). Notify your doctor immediately if you are exposed to anyone who has chickenpox, shingles, or measles and you have not had such infections before.
Consult with your doctor before you receive any vaccine. It is not recommended to receive a live vaccine (eg, measles, mumps) while you are using Budesonide.
Notify your doctor or dentist that you take Budesonide before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
Budesonide is not effective in case an asthma attack has started. It is recommended to carry and use appropriate medicine (bronchodilator inhalers) for the emergency help. You should consult with your doctor immediately, in case your short-acting inhaler does not work well (eg, 4 or more times a day for more than 2 days in a row; more than 1 canister in 8 weeks), if you have a decrease in your peak flow meter results, or your asthma worsens.
Sometimes you may have severe breathing problems right after you take a dose of Budesonide. It often takes place after the first usage of a new canister or vial. In such cases, you should use your short-acting bronchodilator and seek emergency right away. Avoid taking any more doses of Budesonide unless recommended by your physician.
Lab tests, including lung function, adrenal function, and bone density and eye exams, may be performed while you are using Budesonide. It is important to control your progress or to check for side effects. Follow all doctor and lab appointments strictly.
In some cases growth rate in children and teenagers may be affected by corticosteroids. It is important to have regular growth checks while they use Budesonide.
Use Budesonide with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 6 years old, as safety and effectiveness in these children have not been proved.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING
In case you become pregnant, consult with your doctor and discuss the benefits and risks of taking Budesonide while pregnancy. It is not clear whether Budesonide passes into breast milk. Avoid breast-feeding a baby while taking Budesonide.
Possible side effects of Budesonide
You should consult with your doctor in case you have any of side effects especially bothersome listed below: nasal congestion; throat irritation.
Seek emergency immediately in case you have any of these severe side effects: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); ear pain or discharge; new or worsening asthma symptoms (eg, increased wheezing); depression; mental or mood changes; severe or persistent diarrhea or stomach pain; shortness of breath after using Budesonide ; signs of infection (eg, fever, chills, or sore throat); vision changes; white patches in the mouth or throat.
