Omeprazole is a medicine used for the treatment of various acid-related stomach and esophagus problems, such as GERD, ulcers, erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, persistent heartburn. It may be also administered with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, clarithromycin) in order to treat ulcers.
Omeprazole may also be administered to treat other conditions as determined by your physician.
You should not use Omeprazole in case you have ever had any type of liver disease. In this situation you may not be able to use Omeprazole, or a dosage adjustment or special monitoring may be required.
You should not use over-the-counter Omeprazole (Prilosec OTC) without first talking to your doctor in case you have any condition mentioned below: trouble or pain with swallowing; vomiting blood; bloody or black stools; had heartburn for over 3 months; heartburn with sweating, lightheadedness, dizziness, chest, shoulder, neck, jaw, or arm pain; frequent chest pain; heartburn with wheezing; unexplained weight loss; nausea or vomiting; or stomach pain.
Be aware that Omeprazole may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the next: ampicillin; diazepam; digoxin; doxercalciferol; iron salts; itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole or other prescription medicines for fungus or yeast infections; phenytoin; warfarin.
Omeprazole is in the FDA pregnancy category C. It is not clear whether this drug is deleterious to an unborn baby. It is not recommended to take Omeprazole in case you are pregnant or you are breast-feeding a baby. It is not clear whether Omeprazole passes into breast milk. In such situations, consult with your doctor.
You should use Omeprazole as recommended by your doctor. Omeprazole should be taken orally once a day before meal. Take each dose with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. Follow your doctor's instructions. It is obligatory to swallow over-the-counter Omeprazole tablets (Prilosec OTC) whole without chewing, dividing or crushing. Zegerid oral powder should be taken for reconstitution on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before a meal. Pour out the contents of the packet into a small cup containing 2 tablespoons of water. It is important not to use other liquids or foods. Stir the contents and drink at once. Refill the cup with water and drink. In case you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, add 1 tablespoon of applesauce to an empty bowl. Then open the capsule and empty the pellets onto the applesauce. Then mix the pellets with the applesauce and swallow the mixture at once. The applesauce should not be hot and should be soft enough to be swallowed without chewing. Do not store the mixture for future use.
Take Omeprazole regularly. Do not give up using Omeprazole even if you feel well.
Consult with your doctor about restrictions on food, beverages, or activities while using Omeprazole.
Lab tests or appointments may be performed to monitor your treatment with Omeprazole.
Omeprazole should be stored at indoor temperature. Avoid moisture and heat.
In case you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But do not take extra dose in situation when you forget to take Omeprazole and it is near the time for the next intake. Wait and take next dose according to the schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up for a missed one unless your doctor recommends otherwise.
Overdosage: seek emergency in case an overdosage is suspected. Symptoms of an Omeprazole overdose are drowsiness, seizures, shortness of breath, and decreased body temperature.
Possible side effects of Omeprazole
You should consult with your doctor in case you have any of side effects especially bothersome listed below: drowsiness, dizziness, or headache; diarrhea, increased gas, or bloating; or itching.
Stop taking Omeprazole and seek emergency in case you have any of these severe side effects: you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives).
