Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It slows bacterial growth and allows the body's defense mechanisms to eliminate bacteria.
It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
You should not use Minocycline in case you have any condition mentioned below: you are allergic to any ingredient in Minocycline; you are taking acitretin, aluminum salts (eg, aluminum carbonate), isotretinoin, methoxyflurane, or penicillins.
In such cases it is obligatory to consult with your doctor or health care provider before taking this drug.
Before using Minocycline
Before using Minocycline you should tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions listed below: you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding a baby; you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances; you have kidney problems.
Be aware that Minocycline may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the following: aluminum salts (eg, aluminum carbonate) or cimetidine because they may decrease Minocycline's effectiveness; acitretin, anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), digoxin, ergot alkaloids (eg, ergotamine), insulin, isotretinoin, methotrexate, methoxyflurane, or theophyllines because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Minocycline; penicillins, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), or live oral typhoid vaccine because their effectiveness may be decreased by Minocycline.
It may not be a complete list of all interactions with other drugs. To prevent any complications you should check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.
How to use Minocycline
Use this medicine as advised by your physician. Minocycline should be taken orally with or without food at the same time each day. It is recommended to take Minocycline with a full glass of water (8 oz/240 mL). It is good idea not to lie down for 30 minutes after taking this drug. In case you also use bismuth salts (eg, bismuth subsalicylate), calcium salts (eg, calcium carbonate), colestipol, iron salts (eg, iron sulfate), magnesium, urinary alkalinizers (eg, daily antacids), sucralfate, vitamins/minerals, quinapril, didanosine, or zinc salts (eg, zinc sulfate), do not take them within 2 to 3 hours before or after taking Minocycline.
In case you miss a dose of Minocycline, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next intake, skip the missed dose and take it according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses to catch up.
Important safety information
Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities as Minocycline usage may lead to drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Try to avoid such activities.
Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths, as you may become sunburned more easily while taking Minocycline. It is recommended to use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.
Long-term or repeated use of Minocycline may lead to a second infection. Consult with your doctor in case signs of a second infection take place.
Minocycline is used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Be aware that it is not effective for treatment of viral infections (eg, the common cold).
Consult with your doctor immediately if you experience severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps or bloody stools. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring immediate medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without consulting your doctor.
Notify your doctor or dentist that you take Minocycline before you undergo any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
Use Minocycline for the full course of treatment, as any failures may decrease the effectiveness of Minocycline and may increase the risk that the bacteria will no longer be sensitive to Minocycline and will not be able to be treated by this or certain other antibiotics in the future.
The effectiveness of hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may be decreased while using Minocycline. It is recommended to use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms) to prevent pregnancy.
Lab tests may be performed while you are using Minocycline. It is important to control your progress or to check for side effects. Follow all doctor and lab appointments strictly.
The ELDERLY may be more sensitive to effects of Minocycline. Use it with caution in this group.
You should use Minocycline with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 10 years old who experience diarrhea or an infection of the stomach or bowel.
Do not use Minocycline in CHILDREN younger than 8 years old, as safety and effectiveness in this group have not been proved. Using Minocycline in CHILDREN younger than 8 years old or in women during the last half of pregnancy may cause a permanent change in the tooth coloring of the child.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING
Minocycline may cause harm to the fetus. In case you could become pregnant, consult with your doctor and discuss the benefits and risks of using Minocycline while pregnancy. It is known that Minocycline passes into breast milk. Avoid breast-feeding a baby while taking Minocycline.
