Information about Cleocin

Clindamycin is in the class of lincomycin antibiotics. Clindamycin works by stopping the production of essential proteins needed by the sensitive bacteria to survive, in this way sensitive bacteria are killed. Use Clindamycin in order to treat serious infections caused by certain bacteria. Do not use it for treating meningitis. Do not use Clindamycin if you have an allergy to Lincomycin or any ingredient in Clindamycin or you experience antibiotic-associated colitis, Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, or meningitis. Seek emergency if you experience any of these symptoms.

The following conditions may interact with Clindamycin. Do consult with your doctor if you experience any of these conditions: you are pregnant, intend to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding a baby; you are administering any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; you are allergic to medicines, foods, or other substances; you experience diarrhea, a gastrointestinal (bowel) disease, liver disease, or are allergic to tartrazine.

Clindamycin may interact with other medicines. Do consult with your doctor if you are taking: Nondepolarizing muscle relaxants (eg, vecuronium) or succinylcholine as Clindamycin may increasethe actions and side effects of these medicines; Erythromycin as it may decrease the effectiveness of Clindamycin, or others.

This list of interactions is not complete. Consult with your doctor if you are taking any other medicines. Do not change the dosage, stop or start taking Clindamycin without medical consultation.

How taken

Take Clindamycin according to the prescription of your doctor. However, read the label of the medicine carefully. Take Clindamycin with or without food, but with a full glass of water (8 oz/240 mL). Try to take it always at the same time. Continue taking Clindamycin even if you feel better. You should take the missed dose as soon as you remember and then follow your usual schedule. Nevertheless, if it is near to the time for your next dose, do not take an extra tablet to catch up for the dose you forgot. Wait and take your next tablet at the regular time. Do not take a double dose. For further information ask your doctor.

Important safety information

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps, or bloody stools as it may be a symptom of a serious side effect. Do not treat any of these symptoms without medical consultation. Do not use Clindamycin for treating viral infections (eg, the common cold). Take only the full course of Clindamycin treatment. If not, the bacteria will become not sensitive to Clindamycin and it will be impossible to be treated with Clindamycin or other antibiotics of the kind. Do not use Clindamycin for a long time or repeat the treatment, as it may be the reason of second infection. Use another medication to treat it. Consult with your doctor if you think you may have a second infection. Consult with your doctor if you are allergic to the dye tartrazine (FD&C Yellow No. 5), as it is in the content of Clindamycin.

You should perform LAB TESTS, including liver function, kidney function, or complete blood counts, may be performed to monitor progress. Do keep all doctor and lab appointments. Elderly people should take Clindamycin carefully as they are more sensitive to its effects. Test bowel frequency regularly.

If children (birth to 16 years) take Clindamycin, test organ system functions regularly. Consult with your doctor if you arte going to become pregnant. Clindamycin passes into breast milk. Consult with your doctor about the risks to your baby if you are or will be breast-feeding while taking Clindamycin. Possible side effects

Consult with your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects: infrequent urination; mild diarrhea; nausea; vomiting. Seek emergency if you have severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); severe or continuing diarrhea; severe stomach cramps/pain; stools/diarrhea with mucus or blood; yellowing of skin or eyes.
