Information about Cipro

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. It is used to treat different types of bacterial infections. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

What is the most important information I should know about ciprofloxacin?

It is not recommended to take ciprofloxacin with dairy products such as milk or yogurt, or with calcium-fortified juice, as they could decrease the effectiveness of this medication.

Continue to take Ciprofloxacin for all course of treatment even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. It is recommended to drink several extra glasses of fluid every day while using this medicine. Do not drink dairy products (milk, yogurt) or calcium-fortified juice with Ciprofloxacin.

Other drugs should be taken at least 2 hours after or 6 hours before you take ciprofloxacin. Your skin is likely to be more sensitive to sunlight while taking ciprofloxacin. Try to avoid exposure to sunlight, sun lamps, or tanning beds.

What should I discuss with my doctor before taking ciprofloxacin?

Before using Ciprofloxacin you should tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions listed below: a history of allergic reaction to an antibiotic; joint problems; kidney disease; or epilepsy or seizures.

In such cases you may not be able to take Ciprofloxacin, or you may require a special dose adjustment or monitoring during treatment.

In case you are pregnant, consult with your doctor before taking Ciprofloxacin. You should not use this medication without medical consultation in case you are breast-feeding a baby.

Be aware that Ciprofloxacin may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the following: acetazolamide; aluminum salts; antacids; caffeine; calcium salts; citric acid; potassium citrate; sodium citrate products; didanosine, ddI; doxercalciferol; iron supplements; magnesium salts; manganese; medicines for diabetes; methazolamide; multivitamins containing calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, or zinc; mexiletine; NSAIDs such as AdvilŽ, AleveŽ, ibuprofen, MotrinŽ, naproxen; phenytoin; probenecid; ramelteon; sodium bicarbonate; sucralfate; theophylline; ursodiol; warfarin; zinc salts.

How to take Ciprofloxacin

Take this medicine as recommended by your doctor. Ciprofloxacin should be taken orally with or without food, at the same time each day. Do not exceed the prescribed dose or take it for longer than prescribed. It is recommended to take each dose with a full glass of water (8 ounces). Swallow the pill whole without crushing, chewing or breaking the extended-release tablet. It allows this medicine to release slowly in the body.

Be aware that Ciprofloxacin is not effective for treatment of viral infections (eg, the common cold).

Keep ciprofloxacin at indoor temperature away from moisture and heat. Avoid freezing.

What happens if I miss a dose?

In case you miss a dose of Ciprofloxacin, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next intake, skip the missed dose and take it according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses to catch up.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention in case overdose is suspected. Symptoms of overdose are seizures, urination problems, weakness, or blue lips with pale skin.

What should I avoid while taking ciprofloxacin?

Try to avoid caffeine while you are taking Ciprofloxacin, because the effects of caffeine may be increased.

Your skin may be more sensitive to sunlight while taking Ciprofloxacin. Try to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, sunlamps, or tanning beds. You should wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen in case you are not able to prevent such exposure. Consult with your doctor if you experience severe burning, redness, itching, rash, or swelling after being in the sun.

Antibiotic usage may lead to diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. In case you experience diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, consult with your doctor. You should not use any medicine to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor has told you to.

Be aware that side effects of Ciprofloxacin may affect your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

What are the possible side effects of ciprofloxacin?

Stop using ciprofloxacin and seek emergency immediately in case you have any of these severe side effects: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using ciprofloxacin and consult with your doctor immediately in case you experience any of these serious side effects: seizure (black-out or convulsions); confusion, hallucinations, depression, or thoughts of hurting yourself or others; sudden pain or swelling near your joints (especially in your arm or ankle); nausea, stomach pain, low fever, lost appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); diarrhea that is watery or bloody; urinating more or less than usual; numbness, tingling, or unusual pain anywhere in your body; or chest pain, pounding or fast heartbeats.

You should consult with your doctor in case you have any of side effects especially bothersome listed below: nausea, vomiting; dizziness or drowsiness; blurred vision; sleep problems (insomnia); joint stiffness or muscle pain; or increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight.
