Information about Carafate

Sucralfate is a gastric protective that is used for treating and preventing ulcers. It forms a protective layer on the ulcer as a barrier against acid, bile salts, and enzymes in the stomach. Sucralfate may be also administered to treat other conditions as determined by your physician.

Before using Sucralfate

Before using Sucralfate you should tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions listed below: you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding a baby; you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances; you have kidney problems or are on dialysis, or have blockage of the intestines or difficulty swallowing.

Be aware that Sucralfate may interact with some medicines. Consult with your health care provider in case you are taking any other drugs, especially any of the next: Citrate salts or medicines that contain aluminum, specifically in patients with kidney disease, because aluminum buildup side effects may occur.

It may not be a complete list of all interactions with other drugs. To prevent any complications you should check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Sucralfate

You should use Sucralfate as recommended by your doctor. Take it orally on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.

An antacid should not be taken for at least 30 minutes before or after using Sucralfate.

It takes from 4 to 8 weeks for complete healing of your ulcer. Do not give up taking Sucralfate for the full course of treatment even if you feel better.

You should not take Sucralfate at the same time as other drugs. Sucralfate should be taken at least 2 hours after other medicines. In case you are not sure about the best time to take Sucralfate, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.

In case you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next intake, skip the missed dose and take it according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses at once.

Important safety information

Sucralfate usage may lead to dizziness. These effects may be worsening by taking alcohol or certain medicines. Prevent driving or performing any other possibly unsafe actions.

Sucralfate contains aluminum. Before you start any new drug, read the label carefully to see whether it has aluminum in it too. In case it contains or if you are not sure, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.

PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING

In case you are or will be breast-feeding a baby while you use Sucralfate, consult with your doctor and discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Sucralfate

You should consult with your doctor in case you have any of side effects especially bothersome listed below: constipation; dizziness; feeling of a whirling motion.

Seek emergency in case you have any of these severe side effects: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).
