Hydroxyzine is used for treatment of anxiety disorders and tension in stressful situations (before surgery, for example).
Hydroxyzine is also useful after surgery as it may increase the effects of other medicines, such as pain relievers and sedatives.
Hydroxyzine is in the class of antihistamines. It is used for treating allergic conditions, especially those that involve the skin, such as hives, itching, and rashes, as it blocks the effects of chemical histamine that naturally appears in your body. However, your doctor may prescribe Hydroxyzine to treat other medical conditions.
The most important information about Hydroxyzine
Hydroxyzine may cause drowsiness or dizziness, so be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. You should avoid such activities if you experience drowsiness or dizziness. Alcohol may increase such symptoms, so take it carefully.
Warnings
Consult with your doctor before taking Hydroxyzine if you experience kidney or liver disease, or if you are allergic to antihistamine. In this case you may need special dosage or monitoring. It may also happen that you are not able to take Hydroxyzine.
Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant, as the benefits and risks of using Hydroxyzine while you are pregnant are not known. There is no reliable data whether Hydroxyzine passes into breast milk. You are not recommended to breast-feed when being treated with Hydroxyzine.
People over 60 years of age are more likely to have side effects from hydroxyzine. Therefore they require a lower dose.
How taken
Take Hydroxyzine according to the prescription of your doctor. Hydroxyzine is to be taken with a full glass of water.
The syrup form of Hydroxyzine should be measured with a dose-measuring spoon or cup.

You should take the missed dose as soon as you remember and then follow your usual schedule. Nevertheless, if it is near to the time for your next dose, do not take an extra tablet to catch up for the dose you forgot. Wait and take your next tablet at the regular time. Do not take a double dose.
